Al Argent - Vice-President

 

Al has worked in the area of municipal recreation services since 1962. After moving west from Ontario, he served as Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Vancouver (East District) until his retirement in 2000. While with the City of Vancouver, Al worked closely with a network of 22 community associations who jointly operated the community centres in the City. During this time, he developed a deep respect for the advantages community governance brings to the provision of leisure services.

Al's volunteer work has included: President of the BC Parks and Recreation Association; Vice-President and founding member of the BC Parks and Recreation Foundation; President of the North Shore Winter Club, and a member of the District of North Vancouver's Park and Recreation Master Plan Advisory Committee.

Al Argent lives in the Seymour area with his wife, Jan, who retired from the Parkgate Community Services Board in May 2005.

Chris Burt - Director

 

 

Chris Burt is a Parenting and Family Development specialist with over 15 years of experience supporting families with challenging family and relationship issues, as well as supporting and enhancing community and government system interventions for children and families. Chris’s volunteer experience includes: PAC representative at Cove Cliff Elementary School; Parent Education Chair at the Deep Cove Parent Participation Preschool, and as a youth mentor and interventionist. Chris, his spouse, Teresa, and two elementary school age children have lived in the community for 9 years.

Darryl Condon - President

 

Darryl and his family have lived in the Seymour area since 1993. Darryl is a Registered Architect and has extensive expertise in the study, planning, design, construction and operation of community recreation and sport facilities. Darryl has been involved in the design and construction of highly innovative recreation facilities across Canada. He has lectured on issues related to sport and recreation facility design for groups such as the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association, the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia, and Parks and Recreation Ontario. Through this experience, Darryl has gained tremendous insight into the issues and challenges facing community recreation facility operators.

In addition, Darryl has a strong interest in environmental sustainability, particularly as it relates to the design of sustainable communities. Darryl has served as a volunteer with the following organizations: Architectural Institute of British Columbia City of North Vancouver - Past Chair, Advisory Design Panel Professional Background: Darryl graduated from McGill University's School of Architecture. He is a registered architect and has been practicing for 17 years. He is a partner in a Vancouver based architectural firm, Hughes Condon Marler: Architects, and is active in the planning and design of community buildings across Canada.

Andrea Conn - Director

 

Andrea's roots run deep in the Seymour area as her family has lived in the community for over a century. Her mother attended the one room school located in “the Cove” and her grandfather worked for the Vancouver Shipyards in North Vancouver.

In the pioneering spirit of her family, and in her role as Branch Manager of North Shore Credit Union's Parkgate branch, Andrea has been instrumental in establishing a service standard which recently captured the attention of the community by being voted one of the "Best Financial Institutions" on the North Shore. 

Andrea is proud to have supported the area’s youth by volunteering for the Junior Achievement program as well as the annual Seycove Auction. Andrea is also an active Board member for the Seymour Art Gallery and provides council to various related committees including finance and human resources.

Andrea and her family have enjoyed many of Parkgate Community Centre services over the years including the seniors’ centre, summer camps, youth programs and numerous social events. “We consider ourselves fortunate to have a centre which is the true heart of our community,  providing support, leadership and adventure to people and groups of all ages”, says Andrea, “and it is my distinct honour to serve among the dedicated volunteers and staff that work everyday to ensure our community centre is one to be proud of.

 

 

 

 

Keith Dunn - Director

Keith Dunn is employed in the high tech industry implementing computer mapping and GIS software. He is an active volunteer at Parkgate, assisting with supervision in the weight room, and leading hikes on the North Shore mountains.

Keith is currently working with the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and the North Shore Search and Rescue, to introduce a trail rescue marker system. This system, once implemented will aid rescue workers responding to hikers and mountain bikers who may need assistance while on the trails. In addition to the trail rescue marker system, Keith is also working with both organizations in producing a map which details all the local trails for hikers and bikers to safely enjoy the trails.

Doug Greville - Director

Doug Greville retired from Shell Canada after 29 years in marketing, where he was responsible for millions of dollars of sales each month in asphalt, bunkers and fuels. He has extensive experience with not-for-profit organizations in both management and representation of Boards, such as the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association and the Master Municipal Construction Document Association. More recently Doug was co-chair of the very successful wine and food festival fund raiser for the Seycove Secondary School's Drama Department.

Doug is currently on the Parkgate Seniors' Advisory Committee, and wishes to give back to the community having lived here for about 30 years. Doug is married with two adult daughters.

Peter Hansen - Director

Peter Hansen has been a long term resident of the North Shore, and has lived and worked in the Seymour area in his capacity as a Captain with the District of North Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. Peter currently lives in the Upper Lonsdale area of North Vancouver with his wife Roxanne. Peter served on the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund for over 13 years, and for nine of those years was the Executive Director. During his years on the Burn Fund he initiated an annual BC Firefighters Burn Camp, a summer camp for children who have suffered burn injuries, and the Bright Nights in Stanley Park fund raiser. He has also served in various roles with the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association and the North Vancouver District Fire Fighter's IAFF Local 1183, including 13 years in various positions on the Executive of Local 1183. Peter is currently on the Executive of the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Building Committee.

David Hudson - Treasurer

David J. Hudson, C.A. qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG) in 1973 in Leeds, UK. He emigrated to Vancouver in the same year and worked with large accountant firms: Touche Ross (now Deloittes & Touche), Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young), and Henry Mason Korbin McMahon (now part of Deloittes & Touche) from 1973 to 1982. David worked as an audit senior and manager on a wide range of industries and companies through this period.

David has been a self employed Chartered Accountant since 1982. He lives in Deep Cove with his realtor wife Roberta Hudson and daughters Kelsey and Jaclyn. David has been involved with coaching girls soccer on the North Shore.

Ngaire Roberts - Director

Ngaire and her husband moved to the Seymour area in 1995. Ngaire has worked for the Ministry of Social Services in the Income Assistance Division; Human Resources at the BC Archives and Records Service in Victoria; and several other Government agencies and Ministries.

Ngaire's volunteer work includes: North Vancouver District Child Care Grants Committee, Girl Guides of Canada leader, 2007/08 Parent Advisory Committee President, Block Watch Captain.

Ngaire has two school-aged children and she and her family have enjoyed many activities at Parkgate over the past several years. She is very pleased to now be able to give back to her community and become more integrally involved in the governance of Parkgate Community Centre.

Cathi Stephens - Director

Deep Cove has been home since 1989 to Cathi, her husband and three young daughters. 

Much of Cathi's volunteer time has been devoted to: the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club; the North Shore Girls Soccer Club; and the dragon boat community in Deep Cove. She has always believed that if people enjoy the benefits of an activity, sport or service, then they have to be prepared to step up and help make those things happen.

Cathi's professional background in marketing and advertising began in financial services with VanCity Credit Union; moving to sports and event marketing for clients such as Ironman Canada; public transportation marketing at BC Transit; and ten years managing design projects at Karo Design for various entities from major public corporations to small private companies. 

 

In 2005, intending to step back and focus more in the community, Cathi started ski instructing at Mt. Seymour and developing dragon boat paddling programs with Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre. .Cathi says that working with Parkgate Community Services Board of Directors will allow her to support, on a broader scale, services and programs to meet the needs of our community.

 

 

Bill Tracey - Director

 

 

Bill is a Professional Engineer, in private consulting practice in the field of radio communication. He and his wife, Barbara, have raised three children and are enjoying seven grandchildren. Bill is a member of Mount Seymour United Church and a director of the North Shore Winter Club. He also serves on the executive of the British Columbia Amateur Radio Coordination Council. Bill has served as a director of several local technology firms, and for several years lectured on business finance and engineering economics at Simon Fraser University.

Bill maintains an active interest in community affairs and is pleased to be a Board member of Parkgate Community Services.

Duties and Expectations of the Board and Directors

The boards’ responsibilities lie in five key areas:

Establishing the society’s mission, vision and direction

  • Vision and values

  • Mission and philosophy

  • Strategic planning

  • Programs and services

  • Evaluation

Ensuring the financial health of the organization

  • Responsible for ensuring there are adequate financial resources for the work of the organization

Ensuring the society has sufficient and appropriate human resources

  • Responsible for the working conditions in the organization

  • Responsible for hiring, giving direction to and evaluating the Executive Director

Directing organizational operations

  • Responsible for ensuring that the organization and its directors are in compliance with its legal requirements

  • Responsible for ensuring that the board works effectively

  • Responsible for overseeing organizational structure and administration

Ensuring effective community relations

  • Responsible for responding to changing needs and issues in the community

  • Responsible for finding ways to meet emerging needs

The directors of the society have the following duties:

Duty of attention

  • Directors cannot be figure heads.  They must pay attention to the business of the society.

  • Each director is expected to be a member of at least one standing committee.

  • Directors should be prepared to spend a minimum of 4.5 to 5 hours per month attending board and committee meetings.

 

Duty of care

  • Directors must participate in decision making based on solid information.  It is each director’s duty to attend meetings, and to ask questions.  They must care for the health of the society, its people and its property.

Duty of obedience

  • Directors must know the mission and bylaws of the society, and be aware of laws and regulations affecting it.

Duty of loyalty

  • Each director must make decisions that are in the best interest of the society.  Any conflicts of interest must be declared.

Fiduciary duty

  • Each director is responsible for the financial health of the organization by insuring that adequate financial systems are in place.
