Parkgate's Improvements for People with Disabilities
There are a number of improvements that we have spearheaded at Parkgate Community Centre in order to make it more accessible to all members of the community. These improvements include:
:
- Automatic door openers installed in five locations - (1) the doors leading from the main foyer into the back yard, (2) from the main foyer into the women's washroom and change room, (3) from the main foyer into the men's washroom and change room, (4) the door leading into the weight room, and (5) the single washroom located across from the Weight Room.
- Overhauling the backyard playground including putting in a picnic table that is wheelchair accessible, and installing a ground cover that scooters, strollers, walkers and wheelchairs can travel over safely.
- Installation of a hearing assist loop in several meeting rooms throughout the Community Centre.
- Installation of grab bars in the main women's and men's washrooms.
- Installation of a "help button" in the washroom across from the Seniors' Centre.
- New weight room equipment such as the Active Passive Trainer, the NuStep (has a swivel seat for easy transfer on and off as well as adjustments to accommodate for varying levels of mobility and strength), the new cable pulley machine has ultra light starting resistance of 2.5lb and optional stability bars to hold on to while exercising if needed. We also have a lat pull down machine with a removable seat allowing wheelchair users to access the machine whilst remaining in their wheelchair.
- An improved layout in the weight room that increases the space to move between equipment.
- We have mounted the hand sanitizer in the weight room so that it is lower on the wall for customers who use wheel chairs. We have also moved the location of some of the cleaning stations (spray bottles) so that they are lower and easier to access.
- New weight room mitts that improve grip for those with tremors or challenges with grip strength and control and allow safe use of a wider range of equipment such as pulleys and the Nu-step.
