Meet the Camp Leaders
Emily Maxwell, Camp Supervisor After volunteering for our summer camps Emily was brought on as a full time summer camp staff member in 2014. During the school year, she is a youth worker down in the Parkgate Youth Centre for drop-ins, movie nights, and pre-teen dances. Teaching is Emily’s calling and she is receiving her Bachelor of Education in May 2015. She loves to be outdoors hiking with her dogs, swimming, biking, or playing guitar and wants to be a famous rock star/high school counselor when she grows up.
Neil Smith, Camp Leader Neil works in the Parkgate and Seymour School Age Care Programs and has a history of teaching various sports and climbing programs over the years at Parkgate. This is his second summer working at Summer Daycamps where he’s already known as a playful, goofy, funny and energetic leader. Neil is an English student at Capilano University and working towards a career in education. To our team he also brings his musical talents in singing and playing guitar.
Kelsey Hansell, Camp Supervisor Kelsey is sure this third year supervising camps at Parkgate will be the best one yet! Her almost four years of experience with PCSS has taken her to Infant/Toddler care, 3-5 care, School Age care, and Preteen Dances. Kelsey is currently completing her sociology degree through distance education. Her goal is to become a youth social worker although, like Peter Pan, she secretly hopes she never grows up!
“The staff and camp culture are what matter most. ” – parent feedback
Alexandra Lamb, Camp Leader Alexandra has been working at Parkgate for the past five years leading birthday parties, climbing classes, camps, and child minding. Her volunteer work includes various summer camps at Parkgate, coaching field hockey and helping in a grade 1 classroom. She is currently studying education at SFU with a focus on early learning and is pursuing a career as a primary level teacher. She enjoys being outdoors, reading, baking, doing crafts – and fishing!
Erika Vieweg, Camp Leader Erika joined our PCSS team last September and has since worked in School Age Care, 3-5 care, child minding and the pre-teen dances. She is an experienced camp leader having worked with North Vancouver Recreation and Culture summer camps and UBC swim and basket ball summer camps. Erika’s Bachelor of Arts degree from UBC specializes in child behavior intervention. Next year she will be at Capilano University in the Special Education Assistant program. Remember to challenge her for a basketball game!
“Our two boys LOVED this camp and were sad when it was over… they want to go again next summer.. they are still talking about their leaders.” – parent feedback
Nicole Hocevar, Camp Supervisor This summer will be Nicole’s 10th year working in the Parkgate’s Licensed Summer Camps. Nicole has a School-age Child Care Certificate from Douglas College and her extensive work experience with PCSS covers all the ages from infant/toddler care to preteen dances. This makes her one of a kind educator who gets to know many of our kids and families beyond age groups. Because of the camps, summer is Nicole’s favorite time of the year! She loves playing camp games, meeting new children and visiting all the fun locations our city has to offer. Try to guess how many cameras Nicole has in her collection and ask her the correct answer!
Chantelle Chow, Camp Leader Bonjour! Chantelle has worked for one year and volunteered numerous years with daycamps in the past and enjoyed every minute; camp days are full of laughs, fun, and excitement! At a very young age she knew she wanted a career working with young children and she is passionate about teaching. She is currently in the general arts & science program at Capilano University/ SFU and pursuing a career as a French Immersion Kindergarten teacher.
